Therapeutic use of psychedelics
Ayahuasca, entheogens and psychedelics
Throughout history, various cultures and societies have used psychedelics to have visionary, spiritual, therapeutic and recreational experiences. These substances have been used in religious rituals, shamanic practices, healing ceremonies, and as tools for mind exploration. Here are some notable examples:
1. Traditional use in indigenous cultures: Different indigenous cultures around the world have used sacred plants, such as peyote in the Huichol culture, ayahuasca in the Amazon and psilocybin mushrooms in various cultures, such as Mexican indigenous people, to achieve altered states of mind. consciousness and obtain visions that they consider sacred and revealing.
2. Use in religious rituals: Some religions have used psychedelics as part of their spiritual practices. For example, in Santo Daime and the Unification Church, ayahuasca is used as a sacrament in religious ceremonies.
3. Scientific research and therapy: Beginning in the 1950s, there was growing interest in research into the therapeutic effects of psychedelics, especially with substances such as LSD and psilocybin. Studies and clinical trials were conducted to explore its potential in treating mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
4. Countercultural movement and personal exploration: During the 1960s, psychedelics became popular in the context of the countercultural movement. Many people use them as tools for expanding consciousness, personal exploration, and seeking transformative experiences.
5. Recreational and social use: In addition to traditional and spiritual uses, psychedelics have also been used recreationally in social settings. The consumption of substances such as LSD, psilocybin mushrooms and ecstasy (MDMA) has been part of the culture of music and festivals, where a playful experience and emotional connection are sought.
On this occasion I interview the psychologist Sergio Sanz Navarro to talk about the situation of the use of psychedelics on a therapeutic level in Spain. Mainly ayahuasca and MDMA. Sergio is a psychologist and conducts retreats using Ayahuasca in Spain. He also tells us about his arrest by the police in Barcelona, where under the presumption of committing a crime his house was raided. It explains the current legal status of ayahuasca and much more.
